Family FAQ

You asked:

Can I get a discount if I'm buying a computer for my child's educational use?

The Online Family answers:

In some cases, you may be able to, yes. Some hardware and software makers do offer educational discounts or rebates. For instance, the Apple Store offers reduced rates. Dell also offers discounts through schools and universities -- so check with your school. Microsoft offers discounted software for educational use by students and teachers. And sites like Academic Superstore offer deep discounts for students, but you need to be able to prove that you have a student in your household by providing documentation such as student ID, letter of enrollment on school letterhead, or a registration receipt.

Tech Tip

Add Memory

If your two- to three-year-old computer is sluggish, instead of getting a new model, you might just need to add more memory. You can do this yourself -- see your computer maker's web site for instructions about where to install additional memory once you purchase it.
